An intermediate piece is for selectively acting on a medium flowing through a pipeline e.g. in a hair dryer. An exchangeable cartridge (16) has a longitudinal groove (18) on the side for accepting a short circuit line (19) on the intermediate piece. A solid plate (7) on the intermediate piece acts with a freely runable plate (12) so that the holes (8, 9, 13, 14) in both plates, by turning the plate relative to each other, pass the flowing air selectively and infinitely variably through the by-pass line (19) alone or only through the longitudinal channels of the cartridge.
