The minerals employed in the mixt. are fed into the inlet end of the drum and travel in the same direction as the flame from a burner located in the inlet end. Inside the drum, and just beyond the tip of the burner flame is a deflector fitted with radial baffles arranged in the shape of a star. The baffles direct the hot burner gases radially so they flor round the edge of the deflector and travel along a helical path to the outlet end of the drum. Helical baffles may be located downstream of the deflector. The deflector prevents the burner flame from direct contact with bitumen, which is fed into the drum downstream of the deflector, and also greatly improves heat transfer between the burner gases and the mixt.
