Variations of Asphalt Percentage in Bituminous Mixes from Drum Dryer Mixers

A study was undertaken between 1980 and 1985 to determine the amount of liquid asphalt variability in drum mix plants. A total of 25 drum mix plants were monitored for asphalt content. Data also includes 4 batch plants although the study did not specifically address the monitoring of batch mix plants. Historical data is included along with some work from other states. A Troxler Model 2226 asphalt content gauge was found to be the most practical device to accomplish the study. Extraction data from previous years is also included. Most of the data was statistically analyzed as the amount of shift or deviation from the job mix asphalt target content. In the study a shift of .29% from the target with an ESD of .27% was determined. The report concluded with some possible specifications.
