The arrangement is intended for polishing hard stone such as marble or granite, in a sequence of operations. It comprises a slide support carried in a bridge which is itself movable at right angles to the sliding direction of the support and a work-support table. The polishing tool is carried in a spindle driven by a motor and is releasably held in it. The spindle is vertically movable by a cylinder actuator. A sensor measures level deviations on the surface of the work and the wear of the tool. Electronic work classifying devices are provided and a tool magazine for automatic tool change.
