A moulded seal (9) has an external annular ridge (10) by which it locates in a corresponding groove (12) inside a pipe (1). The outer end of the seal (9) has a flange (14) which fits around the end of the pipe (1) and finishes flush with its outer surface. A continuous plastic jacket (15) covers the outer surface of the pipe (1), and extends over the edge of the seal flange (14). The mating pipe (2) also has a plastic jacket (16) and, being of a smaller diameter, on assembly is pushed through the seal (9), compressing the latter's bulbous inner end (5).
