A ship's steering gear incorporates a main operating liquid system (8) and an auxiliary operating system (12) which are alternatively pressurizable and pressure loaded valves (13, 14, 15, 16) arranged to connect selectively the main liquid system or the auxiliary liquid system to the thruster devices (2, 3, 4, 5) coupled to the rudder stock according to whether the valves are unoperated or operated respectively, said valves being connected to the auxiliary liquid system to receive their loading pressure therefrom. Means are also provided for pressurizing the auxiliary system automatically on failure of pressure in the main liquid system. IMAGE
