A converter was consisted essentially of a sheet-steel casing(1) with a refractory lining and an inserted nozzle bottom in which a substantial portion of the converter bottom is free of nozzles; and each nozzle(4) is made of an oxygen pipe(6) and a concentric encasing gas pipe(7), and in which a non-return valve is arranged in the feed line to each encasing-gas pipe.
