A piston (4) has extensions at its two ends which have externally toothed gears (3). These mesh with internally toothed gears (2) on the stator of the machine. The diameter of the internally toothed gears (2) is twice that of the externally toothed gears (3). In consequence of this geometry a point on the piston moves in a straight line perpendicular to the axis of rotation as the piston rolls round the internally toothed gear (2). A bevel gear (6), extending from this point, meshes with a bevel gear (7) on a shaft (8) parallel to the axis of the piston. This shaft therefore rotates and reciprocates simultaneously.
