The arrangement is intended for a lathe used for machining the inner and outer peripheries of non-circular piston rings either single or stacked (5). The headstock spindle (2) is motor driven (16) via a belt (19) with a spring-loaded tensioning roller. The spindle speed is cyclically varied during each revolution to optimise the cutting speed whilst the cutting tools (6,7) are moved radially to and fro (8-10 cam 14 and follower 13). The speed variation is achieved by using a circular belt (19) drive pulley, eccentrically arranged on the spindle (2). The spring of the belt tensioning roller may act as an energy store.
