The indicator has an optical and/or acoustic emergency indicating member to show random stops, deceleration and the start of braking. An operating device is connected to the vehicle's control element and initiates the indicating member as soon as the driver sets the control element in a position for initiating the emergency indicating member. A timing element is used by the driver to set the time for which the emergency indicating member is in operation. The operating device is a switch connected to the brake pedal to operate stop lights and able to actuate the emergency indicating member as soon as the driver's foot presses on the brake pedal. The switch may be a proximity type.
