The mechanism drives a transformer stepping switch and includes a driving wheel, a driven shaft and a locking disc turning with the shaft and which can be stopped in both rotational directions by outside components. The clutch components are placed inside the inner edge of the driving wheel and are declutched by stops on the locking disc. The shaft bears a gripping disc which turns inside the circular inner edge of the driving wheel. Slots are provided between the gripping disc and the edge of the driving wheel. In each slot there is a gripping roller which is or pushed by a spring, and which is associated with a stop of the locking disc.
