This invention relates to a 9-hydroxyethoxymethyl guanine derivative of formula (I) (I) wherein W and Z are the same or different and each represents an hydrogen atom or pharmaceutically acceptable cation. Provided are pharmaceutical compositions comprising a compound of formula (I) together with an acceptable carrier therefor, and the use of the compounds in medicine. Also provided are methods for the synthesis of the novel compounds. Compounds of formula(I) have good antiviral activity against several types of virus, in particular those in the Herpes family.
