The adjustable stanchion has one outside tube, with one or more holes through it, and one inside tube displaceably mounted inside it, with a number of holes through it, along its length, and there is a locking pin to bolt them together. The inside tube's (11) cross-section has a varying wall thickness along its periphery, and the holes in it pass through the thickened areas thus formed. There are pref. two thickened area sited opposite each other in the diameter, with the holes passing through them. There may be a ring (16) fixed round the outside tube (10), with the hole in this tube passing through it; or a number of such rings, with holes through each. The inner tube periphery may deviate from the circular. This is light in weight, but rigid when bolted.
