A horizontal transporting trough (17) which incorporates a screw which transports the coal delivered at one end of the transporting trough to a vertical discharge situated at the other end. In the case of charging cars which can be moved across the roof of coke furnaces, the transporting trough is particularly suitable for transporting the coal dropping out of the car containers to telescopic tubes mounted on the furnace roof above the charging holes of the furnace chambers. To prevent the coal forming lumps in the spaces situated outside the helix of the transporting screw, a screen (25) surrounding the helix of the screw is incorporated at the inlet opening of the trough. A guide vane (26) which is inclined at an angle to the transport direction and which shaves off any coal still adhering to the wall of the trough can be provided above the outlet of the trough. The base of the trough which conforms to the shape of the helix can drop away at an angle after the outlet. IMAGE
