Combined single reactor process is for (A) catalytic conversion (e.g. trans-alkylation) of 7-12C alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons, or alternatively (B) thermal hydro-dealkylation of the same hydrocarbons, on an acid heterogeneous catalyst. (A) is carried out at 288-538 degrees, and (B) at 427-704 degrees C with addn. to the charge of an agent for reversible poisoning of the acid sites on the catalyst. The catalyst is a crystalline Al silicate zeolite material or thermal decomposition product thereof. The poisoning agent is a basic cpd. contg. S, N or O atoms. Reactor is used for disproportionation of toluene to benzene, isomerisation etc. A single reactor system can be used for both processes the change-over being effected by stopping or starting the flow of poisoning agent and charging the operating conditions.
