The butadiene polymer or copolymer with a conjugated diolefin or an aromatic cpd contg. a substd vinyl gp. A and the ethylenically unsatd dicarboxylic acid cpd. e.g. maleic anhydride are reacted to form the adduct in the presence of one or more cpds. selected from derivs. of p-phenylene diamine, catchol, pyrogallol, N-nitrosamines, quinoline and naphthol, in amt of 0.005 - 5, pref. 0.1-2% with respect to A, at 120-250 degrees C, esp 150-220 degrees C.
