The water-filled mattress (2) fits into a safety trough (1) made of a plastics foam. The upper surface (3) forms the base for the mattress and has closed pores providing an effective seal should the water leak out if the mattress is damaged. The safety trough can now be used in place of a conventional mattress fitted in or on a normal bed. The safety trough is very light making it easy to handle and transport. The trough pref. comprises two parts connected together along their end sides by adhesive tapes or the like allowing for even easier handling.
