The system has a heat exchanger, an evaporator, a condenser, a compressor and a heat carrier circuit. There is a cooling medium circuit and a heating medium circuit. Exhaust gas from the I.C. engine is transferred to the heating medium circuit in a heat exchanger and the feed temp of the circuit to consumers is regulated. The heat exchanger is formed as a heat store. At low heat demand from the consumers, the store is heated and none or a small amount of heat only is transferred to the circuit. When the store temp has reached a certain level, the I.C. engine is switched-off. The feed temp of the circuit is adjusted by a controlled heat input from the store. The engine is switched-on again, when the store temp reaches a certain low level.
