A percussion tip, activated by a striker piston moved to and fro in the casing, and guiding surfaces to control the running direction are incorporated in a self-propelled ramming and drilling appliance, esp. for drilling in the ground. The percussion tip (5) has an inclined surface (8) at the front. Inclined surfaces may be interchangeable, providing different angles of slope. They may be roof-shaped. The tip may be of oval cross-section in this area, with the inclined surface running in the line of its major axis. It can be fitted with an axial guiding structure (10,11).
