Folded sheets D, discharge at the end of an endless belt 4 into a stack and are pre-compressed by brush belts 52 and by alternately operating clamping plates 36, 37 operating on the folded edges. The stack 62 is then compressed longitudinally by compressing element 27 before tying. In order to achieve continuous stacking, gaps are formed in the oncoming stream by fingers 9, temporary stack supports 19 are extended and stack separator plates 45 are interposed between one stack and the next. As a stack 62 is completed it is lowered from the position where it is stacked by downward movement of support 58 on spindles 54, 55 on a rollerway 63. IMAGE
