PURPOSE:To make stable mass production of a uniform thin strip possible by controlling the flowrate of cooling water to be supplied into a cooling roll in accordance with the deviation of the actually measured value of the surface temp. of the roll from a set value. CONSTITUTION:A quickly cooling roll 8 is supported by bearings, and is rotated at high speed by means of a belt or the like. Molten steel is quickly cooled thereon to solidify to a thin strip 9. The inside cylinder 12 provided in the roll 8 conducts the cooling water fed through a hollow shaft 14 from a rotary joint 13 to the part under the roll surface. The water used in cooling the roll 8 is discharged through a shaft 15 out through a rotary joint 16. Always fresh water is supplied into a water storage tank 17 through a water supply pipe 18 and is kept at a constant level with a level control system. The surface temp. of the roll is measured with a thermometer 19 such as an IR thermometer, and the signal thereof is introduced to a controller 20, where said temp. is compared with a set value, and the opening of a flow rate control valve 22 provided on the delivery side of a pump 21 is so regulated as to maintain the set value at all times. Thus the surface temp. of the roll is maintained constant.
