The invention relates to active electrochemical substances for use as the negative and particularly the positive electrodes of an accumulator. The invention provides more active electrochemical substances by the use of hydroxides of iron in the +III degree of oxidation, which have been manufactured by hydrolysis of iron (III) salts carried out whilst maintaining constant specific pH values lying within the range of 1 to 13, the constant values being maintained within +/-0.05 pH units.
