The connection of waterways by means of a canal which is to be constructed artificially or by extending an existing body of water can have serious problems. A connection of waterways without the cargo of the water craft having to be unloaded can be achieved by means of the proposed transport process on railway routes. This serves primarily for horizontal transport. Special requirements are placed on the railway route with respect to substructure, spacing of the track axles, clearance height, inclination conditions and propulsion vehicles. Loading takes place in loading locks whose sill depth has to correspond at least to the constructional height of the ship loading wagon. The ship loading wagons are equipped with a chassis which can be moved on two or more tracks in articulated fashion; the payload corresponds for example to the overall weight of loaded Europa barges. With a stable barge body, dry transportation is possible on a platform with hydraulically movable plate elements. For other barges wet transportation is possible with basins on the articulated chassis.
