The invention relates to a chromium-nickel-molybdenum-vanadium steel for blades of the plate line shears for the cold-shearing of high-strength plate, profile iron and scrap. It is the object of the invention to provide a chromium-nickel-molybdenum-vanadium steel of increased toughness and compressive strength, which in addition has a longer service life and cutting edge resistance to compressive deformation. According to the invention, this object is achieved when the steel, in addition to iron, also contains 0.4 to 0.7% by mass of carbon, 0.2 to 0.7% by mass of manganese, 0.15 to 0.40% by mass of silicon, 1.0 to 2.0% by mass of chromium, 3.0 to 5.0% by mass of nickel, 0.3 to 0.6% by mass of molybdenum, 0.1 to 0.5% by mass of vanadium, at most 0.03% by mass of phosphorous and at most 0.03% by mass of sulphur. The steel according to the invention can also be used for the manufacture of tools for the cold-shearing of plate, for embossing tools and the like.
