Catalysts for the dimerisation of toluene or xylene by oxidative dehydrogenation, of the general formula (I PbaBibMcOx (I are described. In this formula, M is at least one element from the group comprising tin, niobium, tantalum and gallium; a = 0.1 to 10; b = 1; c = 0.05 to 4, and x is a number defined by the valency of the lead, bismuth and by M. In the presence of these catalysts, 1,2-diphenylethane, 1,2-diphenylethylene and dimethyl derivatives thereof can be prepared by dimerisation of toluene or xylene at temperatures from 350 to 650 DEG C.
