Composite rolling mill rolls - with mechanically attached wearing shell

Rolling mill roll comprises a cylindrical body to which a removable shell working surface is attached. Diametrically opposed slots in one end of the shell engage driving dogs formed integral with the body. Axial location pins fit into slots at the other end, pref. aligned with the first. The pins are located in recesses machined in the body, fixed by bolts passing through them into tapped holes. An inclined face on each pin bears on a similarly inclined face at the end of the groove. This simple system of locating shells both axially and radially by mechanical means saves up to 60% of the time taken to change shells located by other means. There are no threads on the outer dia. of the body exposed to possible damage.
