In a small-section rolling mill with a water cooling stretch before the finishing train for thermomechanical finish rolling, in each case one stand group of the intermediate train or of the intermediate trains, which is set for the rolling of a larger finishing cross-section than the smallest possible finishing cross-section, is transferred to a stand location of the finishing train, immediately upstream of which is arranged a water cooling stretch. The finishing train for the smallest possible finishing cross-section no longer needs to be converted for larger finishing cross-sections, but is simply replaced by a stand group from one or more intermediate trains. For transferring stand groups, crane work can be eliminated if quick change devices are used which are all connected to one another by a pair of rails which extends parallel to the rolling line and as far as the stand location or locations of the finishing train. Thermomechanical finish rolling of the larger finishing cross-sections can be achieved without having to convert the finishing train for all desired finishing cross-sections.
