This invention relates to a portable microform reader comprising a box-shaped housing having a base (15) for mounting the housing on a level surface, a front face having a screen (18), the screen being inclined to the horizontal when the base is mounted on the level surface, and a microform feed aperture (9) arranged at the rear of the housing, the reader further comprising an optical system arranged in the housing comprising a lamp (3), an objective lens (7), means (4, 5, 6) for directing light from the lamp to the lens and a single mirror (8), arranged in the housing, for receiving light from the lens and directing it onto the screen.
