PURPOSE:To realize smooth counting operation by changing the period of a clock pulse into a short period while storing a count value immediately before when a counter counting the distance to a detected body exceeds its counting capacity. CONSTITUTION:Counter circuits 4A-4C are decimal counter circuits, count values of which are stored in latches 3A-3C and displayed by display units 1A-1C. Now, when count values of circuits 4A-4C are within their counting capacities, they count clock pulses from a clock pulse source, but once they exceed capacities, gate circuit 14 is cut off to stop the transmission of clock pulses to circuit 4A. Then, those count values are stored in latch circuits and displayed until next counting operations start. Simultaneously, the period of clock pulses is divided by then by divider circuit 16 and pulses are supplied to counter circuit 4A via gate 17. In this way, counting operations when count values exceed count capacities can smoothly be performed.
