PURPOSE:To obtain a monoclinic system compound represented by 4MgO. 6Fe2O3.9GeO2 (Mg4Fe12Ge9O40) by mixing Mg, Fe and Ge or oxides thereof in a specified atomic ratio and heating the mixture at a proper temp. CONSTITUTION:Mg, MgO or a compound decomposable into MgO by heating is mixed with Fe, Fe2O3 or a compound decomposable into Fe2O3 by heating and Ge, GeO2 or a compound forming GeO2 by heating in the form of powder so as to make the atomic ratio among Mg, Fe and Ge 4:12:9. This mixture is heated at =800 deg.C, and after finishing the reaction, the reaction product is rapidly cooled. By this method a monoclinic system black compound represented by 4MgO. 6Fe2O3.9GeO2 (Mg4Fe12Ge9O40) is obtd. This compound is useful as a magnetic material, a semiconductor material and a catalyst.
