The subject of the present invention is the production of methanol by hydrogenolysis of methyl formate, under hydrogen pressure, in the presence of a catalyst based on a metal of group VIII and a metal of group IVA deposited on a support. The conversion is carried out, preferably, at a temperature of between 200 and 250 DEG C and under a total pressure of 40 to 70 bars.
