Compounds having the formula …CHEM… wherein R1 is hydrogen, halo, amino, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, trifluoromethyl or hydroxy; R2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, acetyl, trifluoroacetyl, phenyl, or substituted phenyl; R3 is hydrogen or lower alkanoyl; X is CH or N; and Y is a pharmaceutically acceptable anion derived from a strong acid; and the dotted lines represent optional double bonds in the 5, 6 and 7, 8 positions, are novel as pharmaceuticals and may be incorporated into pharmaceutical compositions. The compounds are useful for modulating the immune response in warm blooded animals. The compounds are novel in themselves except when the group …CHEM… in formula II represents ortho-phenylene whilst R2 is lower alkyl or phenyl or where the group having formula III is ortho-phenylene in formula I whilst R2 is lower alkyl, R3 is hydrogen and Y is acetate. The preparation of the compounds is also described.
