Method and apparatus for electrophotographically producing high quality reproductions which contain different content types. A photoconductor image sector is subjected to separate exposures of complementary originals O1 and O2. The exposure of component original O1 from exposure station (13) is selected for good tone-scale reproduction of continuous-tone image portions. The complementary exposure of original O2 from exposure station (23) is selected for high-contrast reproduction of line-type image portions. Photoconductor background areas, which border continuous-tone image portions, are exposed to a discharge level below the system"s development level by the high contrast exposure of O2.
