In the feed of cartridges (26, 27) from an ammunition container (13, 14) to a firearm (10), at high rates problems arise in the acceleration of an endless feed chain (29, 30) by which the cartridges (26, 27) are fed to the firearm (10). In a known cartridge feed device of this type, there is an elastic compensating loop in the feed channel. According to the invention, the feed chain (29, 30) is guided on a guide rail (90). The feed chain (29, 30) can be lengthened and shortened, and at the start of series firing the entire portion (35) of the endless feed chain (29, 30) to be fed is concertinaed and the empty portion (36) is stretched.
