In the operation of a coking plant, the machine units (13, 14, 15, 16) movable along the coke oven battery must, during the filling and emptying steps of a combustion chamber (11), be moved to defined working positions. For undisturbed operation, the working positions of the various machine units (13, 14, 15, 16) must be determined. For this purpose, the invention proposes to fix, along the coke oven battery, irradiated reflectors which mark the working positions of the mobile machine unit (13). The reflectors are arranged on coding plates (23) in such a way that, from their number and mutual spatial arrangement, there is an unambiguous relationship with the corresponding position number of the machine unit (13).
