The invention is concerned in particular with measures to increase the pressure and the temperature in the outer combustion chamber of a combustion chamber fed from a set of compressors and located between compressors and expansion systems, and at the same time to keep the entire engine or the combustion system reliable so that at the high temperature even solid fuel, for example in rod form, can be burnt at a certain rate of advance of the fuel rod. The temperature can be raised to such a level that the self-inserting fuel rod spontaneously ignites and burns. After combustion, overhot gas may be efficiently cooled by water injection and used for the output of work. In implementing the invention it emerged that, due to good compressors, valves and the combustion chamber design, such engines with outer combustion chambers can also function as petrol engines with levels of efficiency every bit as good as those of conventional spark ignition engines. Powdered fuel can also be burnt and the parts which serve to complete the engine may have other applications in hydraulics and pneumatics and in aircraft construction and vertical take-off of fixed-wing aircraft. Since the expansion systems in such engines deliver work on each downwards stroke, the engines are especially compact or they give increased power for given weight and dimensions.
