A microfiche reader having a screen, an illuminating arrangement, a lens and a microfiche stage which can be displaced in two coordinate directions (X,Y) and a device for mechanical input and output of a microfiche into and from the stage, having an input and output slot, parallel to one coordinate direction (X), for the microfiche, and having a lateral guide and stop surface for the microfiche which is provided on the stage and parallel to the other coordinate direction (Y), is designed such that a friction roller (18) which can be driven by means of a reversible electric motor (17) in both directions of rotation and serves as drive roller for the microfiche (8) is mounted behind the input and output slot (3) above the rim of the stage (15,7,7a) and with its flat side (18a) directed at an acute angle in the input direction of the microfiche (8) against the guide and stop surface (7d). The result of this is that one transport element suffices for inputting and aligning the microfiche and for outputting the same once again from the reader. IMAGE
