Anhydride group-free, aliphatic, unsaturated sizing agents which contain a single N-C6-C22-alk(en)ylamide group or C6-C22-alk(en)yl ester group as hydrophobic substituent and have at least one anionic group, in particular N-C6-C22-alk(en)ylmonoamides or C6-C22-alk(en)yl monoesters of an aliphatic, unsaturated C2-C6-dicarboxylic acid, or salts thereof - some of the sizing agents being new compounds - are particularly highly suitable for use together with commercial retention aids in a process for pulp sizing paper or board at a fibre suspension pH of at least 6.5 in the presence of, for example, aluminium sulphate or in a process for surface sizing paper.
