Fire or explosion detection and suppression system on board ship

A number, e.g. eight, fire-detection and suppression units (6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20) are provided with a radiation detector head (as 6A) and a fire suppressor (e.g. 6B). The units are disposed about an area to be protected and connect to the master control station (22). Each unit has an independent stand-by electrical power supply. - Any unit detecting a large fire triggers a two-threshold level comparator and a fire-suppressant material is released into a volume to be protected. - However, if a small fire, which triggers only one threshold level, is detected, only those units which are immediately adjacent to the unit signalling a large fire are triggered to release a suppressant. On the master control can cause all the units to release suppressant so as to flood a given volume.
