The invention relates to an improved process for reactivating supported catalysts containing ruthenium and possibly further noble metals by means of extractive treatment of the partially deactivated catalyst compositions with lower water-soluble alcohols and/or ketones. Extractive reactivation can be carried out on partially deactivated catalyst compositions in situ, using a hot stream of the extractant, and results in effective prolongation of the service life and useful life of the noble-metal catalysts.
