The invention provides a catalyst for selective conversion of synthesis gas CO, H2 into C2-C4 light olefins. The catalyst consists essentially of a transition metal of group VIII, and preferably iron, and of manganese forming an intermediate oxide Fe-MnOx, dispersed on an active charcoal support of high specific surface. The catalyst is preferably prepared from iron and manganese precursors which are metal carbonyls or organic complexes of the acetyl acetonate type. The precursors are preferably trivalent complexes of iron and divalent or trivalent complexes of manganese.
