1504124 Water activatable, settable tape EVODE HOLDINGS Ltd 12 March 1975 [13 March 1974] 11213/74 Heading DIP [Also in Division B2] Water-activatable, settable tape comprises a substrate of fibrous material or foamed plastics material coated or impregnated with a waterreactive cementitious composition which is reactive with water to form a hard set mass. the composition comprising at least one conventional siliceous or aluminous cement, an organic binder material and a hydrophilic thickener. The cement may be Portland cement, white cement, stearate-coated cement or Ciment Fondu, and may include diluents or fillers such as silica, clay, calcium carbonate, gypsum, talc, fluospar, barytes, metal oxides and pulverised fly ash. The substrate may be a woven or non-woven natural or synthetic fibrous material, e.g. hesian, steel wool mesh, asbestos, glass-fibre or polymeric material, or synthetic fibrous material, steel wool mesh, asebestos, glass-fibre or polymeric material, or a foamed polymeric material. The binder is preferably an organic polymeric elastomeric material or bitumen. The hydrophilic thickener is suitably a cellulose ether, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, gelatine, gum, clay, sodium silicate, sodium alginate or a hydrophilic polymer. The tapes are made by immersing the substrate in a non-aqueous slurry of the cement, binder, thickener and an organic solvent for the binder, and then drying off the solvent. Alternatively fibrous material may be dispersed in the slurry; a coating of this dispersion then being applied onto a surface and dried thereon, and the layer so formed is stripped off to provide the tape. The composition may contain a water-activated foaming agent to give a foamed structure formed after water-activation and setting of the tape. The tapes are for general constructional, protecting and insulation purposes.
