The rig has a mast formed in particular as a hollow mast from fibre-reinforced plastic and a sail which is fastened with its luff to the mast and whose clew is fastened to the stern fitting of a boom extending transversely to the mast. The mast (1) has a preliminary curvature which approximates to the configuration of the luff (6) of the sail (2). Furthermore, the front area (23) of the mast (1) is formed at least over part of the length with a material (27) which has a comparatively low modulus of elasticity in a first phase of the elastic deformation of the mast (1) in the direction of the clew (8) of the sail (2). At the transition to a subsequent second phase of the elastic deformation, the modulus of elasticity of the material increases abruptly or steadily. The rig can thereby be trimmed in such a way as to preserve the material and and conserve force at high rigidity in the operating state. IMAGE
