Conversion of L-arabinose to L-glucose and L-mannose

L-Arabinose (I) is converted into a mixt. of L-glucose (II) and L-mannose (III) as follows: (a) (I) is treated with CN(-) source at 10-40 deg.C/pH 7-9 under an inert gas; (b) the resulting mixt. of (II)-cyanohydrin and (III)-cyanohydrin is adjusted to pH 1-5 (non-toxic acid) at not more than 25 deg.C under an inert qas; and (c) the prod. imine mixt. is hydrogenated over supported Pd at 10-50 deg.C/not more than 80 psig/pH 1.5-2.5 and the (II)/(III) mixt. is recovered.
