ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA process for the electrochemical production of hydrogenfrom an aqueous alkaline electrolyte characterized by the use as acathode of a material having the general formula AB5Hx wherein A isone or more of rare earth metals or calcium, B is nickel or cobaltand x is a number, generally from 4 to 8 characteristic ofsaturation of the AB5-compound with hydrogen. The hydrogen isgenerated at a relatively low overpotential and thus at highefficiency.
