The stoneware support grid is esp. suitable for filler columns with irregularly heaped filling material as used in liquid and gas material exchange processes, or where there is counterflow of two fluids of different specific gravity, or units bearing or acting as catalytic agents. It comprises grid pieces with a diagonal grid structure trimmed and burnt in a row together and forming a grid beam with a concertina-type structure. The pieces may comprise rows of rectangles assembled in a rhomboid pattern, with adjacent units' corners offset in their angle gaps. There is no tendency to fissure formation while burning and drying and the grid can be tall, and is largely insensitive to temp. variation.
