The process, for use as an intermediate stage in prodn. of sodium carbonate and sulphuric acid, consists of (a) placing an aq. soln. of sodium sulphate, nitrate or chloride in the acid zones of an electro-dialysis cell, sepd. from the basic zones by permselective cationic membranes (b) placing a conductive aq. soln. of NaHCO3 opt. mixed with Na2CO3 in the basic zones and (c) passing a continuous current through the cell between electrodes in compartments at opposite ends of the cell, with current density 1.077-10.77 A/sq.dm.
