In leather drying, the problem is to achieve a uniform distribution of the desired residual moisture and a moisture dosing reproducible in a performing method. To this effect, the leather is exposed for absorption reheating to an electromagnetic wave field in a frequency band comprised between 0.3 and 30 GHz approximately and during or alternatingly with this exposure, it is subjected to a treatment pressure which is reduced with respect to the atmospheric pressure. By using microwaves for absorption reheating in combination with a depression, the leather is incorporated with desired properties as to residual moisture and its suppleness and touch are improved due to the heat produced inside the leather.
