A reservoir (8) is provided able to dispense food into a bowl (4) under the control of a programming clock (17). The reservoir includes a trapdoor (14) opened by an electromagnet (16) against the action of a spring which normally holds the door closed. Food falls into a chute (20) which delivers it to the bowl. A further bowl (5) is constantly topped up with liquid from a second reservoir (9) via a pipe (24). A second pipe (27) ensures that a constant level is maintained within the liquid bowl.
