Process for purifying air or gas streams, which, in accordance with the multipath sorption principle, are conducted in a transverse direction repeatedly in succession, each time in a separation stage, through a multiple-component moving bed, which is composed of flowable filter or sorption materials, which are passed by gravity into the moving bed. The aim is to improve the overall separation efficiency in the filter material. This is achieved by dividing the gas stream after each separation stage into at least two part-streams and feeding each part-stream, depending on its degree of purification in the first preceding separation stage, to a packed bed of defined degree of loading of the second separation stage, for example a lightly purified part-stream from the first stage is fed to a lightly loaded packed bed of the second stage and, conversely, another more intensively purified part-stream is correspondingly fed to a more intensively loaded packed bed of the second stage. Furthermore, a moving bed filter unit suitable for this process is specified, in which the division of the air flow in the deflection chamber is carried out by means of a continuous guide baffle.
